SNAP Challenge: Day Four

Thursday, September 24, 2015

Welcome back to day four of the SNAP challenge!!!

What I ate:

Breakfast:

        Cereal and milk
Lunch:

       Chicken Deli Slices

Dinner:

Frozen chicken nuggets with fries (which I baked all by myself, thank you very much!)
Snacks:

Applesauce (didn’t really eat much of it because I had just chewed gum, and minty applesauce was deplorable. I actually gave it a second chance after dinner and it was STILL GROSS)

    One Brownie with lunch

Drinks:

       Water

How I felt:

In the aftermath of yesterday’s disaster, I felt a bit nervous about approaching the new day. I knew that I had to eat light and I really didn’t want to consume anything that would agitate my still tender stomach. Choosing this course of action, however, did make me hungrier throughout the day.

As you have probably noticed, I have been eating a lot of unhealthy snacks. I never really noticed that I was doing this until I actually logged my food intake. SNAP challenge aside, I really want to learn healthy food habits; especially because junk food is so readily available on college campuses.

I had hoped that the SNAP challenge would push me to eat healthier, but it has done quite the opposite.  I am trying to find a healthy balance so that I can solve my hunger without leaning towards the unhealthy options. I think that my recent unpleasant episode of having a severe stomach ache was like a wake-up call for me. I need to reform how I approach my meals. I did originally buy some healthy options but I have been ignoring them. Perhaps it is because I didn’t invest enough in more appetizing healthy options. I have decided that I will go to Publix tomorrow to buy more fruit with my remaining money.

I am also starting to get a bit nervous because I have noticed that my stock has significantly diminished over these few days. You can imagine my horror when I realized that I was running out of milk.

I still have three more days left in this challenge, and I really want to approach it with a new attitude. My goal is to be wiser with my choices so that I can better ration them out and feel better about what I am eating.

It is also important to note that tomorrow starts the weekend. My friends and I have a tradition of going out to eat every Friday night. It will be very disappointing to have to decline the invitation as it is usually one of the highlights of my week. But, it is what it is and I am determined to complete this challenge.

Daily Question: How has eating on a restricted budget changed your mood or attitude? Is your concentration different? Are you acting differently with family, friends, and coworkers?

On a side note:

LOOK AT THIS GORGEOUS CAT I FOUND ON CAMPUS! She has the most darling blue eyes and a striped tail. I watched her stalk the geese on campus; she tried persistently to nip at their tails. HOW CUTE IS THAT!?!?!?!?!?

Thanks for reading and I will see you all tomorrow!!!!

  1. Terrific insight. Imagine having eat like this all the time. Poverty, hunger and poor performance in school are also connected. It becomes cyclical. Time to break the cycle.
