SNAP Challenge: Day Three

Wednesday, September 23, 2015

Welcome back to day three of the SNAP challenge!!!!

Why today was important and How I felt:

As some of you may know, Wednesday was the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur; a day in which Jews are expected to fast for 24hrs so they can focus on prayer and repentance.

I do observe the Jewish holidays and this was my first fast completely on my own. (Last year’s just so happened to fall on homecoming weekend so my parents were in town with me). I typically don’t have issues with the fast. I have been observing it since I turned 13 and achieved my Bat-Mitzvah.

However, this particular fast was extremely challenging for me. I tried to attend all of my classes, but I could not concentrate and found myself doodling instead of paying attention. My mind was only focused on how hungry, and in turn how tired, I truly was. Normally I would be spending the day at synagogue, surrounded by people who are all fasting as well. It was really hard to focus on other things when everyone around me could eat.

When it came time for dinner, I couldn’t be more ecstatic. (For those of you who don’t know, Jewish holidays start and end at sundown.) I immediately rushed to my fridge and for the third time this week, ate my mac n cheese. Still not satisfied, I indulged in a plate of strawberries and a pop-tart with milk. This may not be different from my usual dinners, but on this particular night, it made me very ill. After not eating for 24hrs and then eating (very quickly) an abundance of processed foods, I became extremely sick to the stomach. Not to mention the fact that I do have a lactose intolerance and any amount of dairy has the potential to irritate me. (I can eat dairy if I take lactate pills…I cannot live without my cheeses).

When I am with my family, we break the fast by eating light, breakfast-type foods such as bagels and lox. Since I this was not in my budget, I was left to eat only what I had previously bought. Even though I had the choice to eat light, I was too hungry to think about the consequences of eating a heavy meal.

After all was said and done, I spent the remainder of my evening curled in bed watching the very gorgeous Colin Firth portray the beloved Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy. I eventually grew hungry and opted to eat some oatmeal as to not upset my stomach. All in all, though I had a very rocky day, it ended quite comfortably; nothing a little Pride and Prejudice can’t resolve.
